Is There a Hadith Prohibiting Reading after ‘Asr?
Question
Does there exist any hadith prohibiting reading/study (mutala’a) after ‘Asr? Please give a satisfying answer.
Answer
[ar]مَنْ أَكْرَمَ حَبِيبَتَيْهِ فَلَا يَكْتُبْ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ[/ar] "Whoever honours his two beloveds [i.e. his eyes] should not write after ‘Asr" — this is not marfu’ (not a report ascribed to the Prophet ﷺ), but Imam Ahmad [ibn Hanbal] ﵀ did indeed instruct some of his companions not to look into a book after ‘Asr — this was related by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi ﵀ and others.
