Surah Al-Ghashiyah (الغاشية)

The Overwhelming · Meccan · 26 ayahs · Juz 30

88:1
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ
Has the news of the overwhelming (enveloping) thing (Qiyaamah) come to you? (Qiyaamah is described as "the overwhelming thing" because its hardship and severity will overwhelm every person.)
88:2
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ
Many faces on that day will be looking down (disgraced because of embarrassment and fear).
88:3
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
(Among these shall be) He who suffered affliction and who endured many difficulties (thinking that he was pleasing Allaah, but his beliefs and actions did not conform with the injunctions of Allaah).
88:4
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً
He shall enter the blazing fire...
88:5
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ
...where he will be given water to drink from boiling springs.
88:6
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
The only food for them (the people of Jahannam) shall be thorny trees...
88:7
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ
...which will neither nourish (their bodies) nor satisfy (their extreme) hunger.
