The Holy Quran 7:172 — Surah Al-A'raf

Arabic text

وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَآ ۛ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَـٰذَا غَـٰفِلِينَ

Translation

(Remember also the time before man was sent to earth) When your Rabb extracted (took) from the backs (loins) of the children of Aadam (their descendants) and (after proving to them that He is their Rabb) called them to witness over themselves saying, "Am I not your Rabb?" They replied, "Certainly! We testify to it." (This was done) So that you do not say on the day of Qiyaamah, “Indeed we were unaware (heedless) of this (Towheed)." (This pledge that mankind made with Allaah is generally referred to as the Pledge of Alist.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

واذكر -أيها الرسول- إذ استخرج ربك أولاد آدم مِن أصلاب آبائهم، وقررهم بتوحيده بما أودعه في فطرهم من أنه ربهم وخالقهم ومليكهم، فأقروا له بذلك، خشية أن ينكروا يوم القيامة، فلا يقروا بشيء منه، ويزعموا أن حجة الله ما قامت عليهم، ولا عندهم علم بها، بل كانوا عنها غافلين.
