The Holy Quran 6:42 — Surah Al-An'am

Arabic text

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

Translation

Indeed We have sent (Ambiyaa) to the nations (communities) before you, then (when the people rejected the Ambiyaa and their message) We afflicted them with hardships (misery) and difficulties (pain) so that they may humble themselves (and accept the message of the prophets).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

ولقد بعثنا -أيها الرسول- إلى جماعات من الناس من قبلك رسلا يدعونهم إلى الله تعالى، فكذَّبوهم، فابتليناهم في أموالهم بشدة الفقر وضيق المعيشة، وابتليناهم في أجسامهم بالأمراض والآلام; رجاء أن يتذللوا لربهم، ويخضعوا له وحده بالعبادة.
