The Holy Quran 5:70 — Surah Al-Ma'idah

Arabic text

لَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَأَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْهِمْ رُسُلًا ۖ كُلَّمَا جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُهُمْ فَرِيقًا كَذَّبُوا۟ وَفَرِيقًا يَقْتُلُونَ

Translation

Most certainly We have taken a (firm) pledge from the Bani Israa'eel (that they should worship only Allaah and obey His Prophets) and We sent to them many Rusul. Each time a Rasool came to them with that which did not appeal to their desires, they rejected a group (of the Rusul, such as Isa عليه الصلاة والسلام) and killed a group of them (such as Zakariyya عليه الصلاة والسلام and Yahya عليه الصلاة والسلام).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

لقد أخذنا العهد المؤكَّد على بني إسرائيل في التوراة بالسمع والطاعة، وأرسلنا إليهم بذلك رسلنا، فَنَقَضوا ما أُخذ عليهم من العهد، واتبعوا أهواءهم، وكانوا كلما جاءهم رسول من أولئك الرسل بما لا تشتهيه أنفسهم عادَوْه: فكذبوا فريقًا من الرسل، وقتلوا فريقًا آخر.
