The Holy Quran 58:16 — Surah Al-Mujadila

Arabic text

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ

Translation

They take their oaths (that they are Muslims) as shields (to protect themselves from being exposed as hypocrites) and prevent (others) from Allaah's path. Theirs shall be a humiliating (disgraceful) punishment.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

اتخذ المنافقون أيمانهم الكاذبة وقاية لهم من القتل بسبب كفرهم، ولمنع المسلمين عن قتالهم وأخذ أموالهم، فبسبب ذلك صدُّوا أنفسهم وغيرهم عن سبيل الله وهو الإسلام، فلهم عذاب مُذلٌّ في النار؛ لاستكبارهم عن الإيمان بالله ورسوله وصدِّهم عن سبيله.
