The Holy Quran 50:36 — Surah Qaf

Arabic text

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ

Translation

How many were the nations that We destroyed before them (the people of Makkah) who were mightier (in power) than them? So (when the punishment arrived) they journeyed through the cities (searching for an escape and calling) "Is there any escape?" (However, despite their strength and resources, they could not escape Allaah's punishment.)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وأهلكنا قبل هؤلاء المشركين من قريش أممًا كثيرة، كانوا أشد منهم قوة وسطوة، فطوَّفوا في البلاد وسلكوا كل طريق؛ طلبا للهرب من الهلاك، هل من مهرب من عذاب الله حين جاءهم؟
