The Holy Quran 4:176 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِى ٱلْكَلَـٰلَةِ ۚ إِنِ ٱمْرُؤٌا۟ هَلَكَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ وَلَدٌ وَلَهُۥٓ أُخْتٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُ مَا تَرَكَ ۚ وَهُوَ يَرِثُهَآ إِن لَّمْ يَكُن لَّهَا وَلَدٌ ۚ فَإِن كَانَتَا ٱثْنَتَيْنِ فَلَهُمَا ٱلثُّلُثَانِ مِمَّا تَرَكَ ۚ وَإِن كَانُوٓا۟ إِخْوَةً رِّجَالًا وَنِسَآءً فَلِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ ٱلْأُنثَيَيْنِ ۗ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ أَن تَضِلُّوا۟ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۢ

Translation

They (the Sahabah رضي الله تعالى عنهم) seek a ruling (verdict) from you (O Muhammad ﷺ). Say, "Allaah shall issue a ruling (verdict) to you concerning the person who leaves neither ascendants (parents or grandparents) nor descendants (children or grandchildren). If a man passes away without any children, but has a sister, then she will inherit half of what he leaves. (If she dies) He will inherit all of her wealth if she has no children. If they (the heirs) are two (or more) sisters, then they will inherit two-thirds of what he leaves. If they (the heirs) are (a few) brothers and sisters, then the male will inherit the similar share of two females. Allaah explains to you (the laws of Shari'ah) so that you do not go astray. Allaah is the Knower of all things.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

يسألونك -أيها الرسول- عن حكم ميراث الكلالة، وهو من مات وليس له ولدٌ ولا والد، قل: الله يُبيِّن لكم الحكم فيها: إن مات امرؤ ليس له ولد ولا والد، وله أخت لأبيه وأمه، أو لأبيه فقط، فلها نصف تركته، ويرث أخوها شقيقًا كان أو لأب جميع مالها إذا ماتت وليس لها ولد ولا والد. فإن كان لمن مات كلالةً أختان فلهما الثلثان مما ترك.
