The Holy Quran 4:157 — Surah An-Nisa

Arabic text

وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا ٱلْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَـٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ لَفِى شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ ۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا ٱتِّبَاعَ ٱلظَّنِّ ۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًۢا

Translation

And (they are also cursed) because they said, “Without doubt we have killed Maseeh Isa عليه الصلاة والسلام the son of Maryam, the Rasool of Allaah.” They never killed him, nor did they crucify him, but they were cast into doubt (when Allaah made the people think that another person was Isa عليه الصلاة والسلام, whom they killed instead). Indeed those who dispute about him (who say that Isa عليه الصلاة والسلام was crucified) are definitely in doubt. The only knowledge they possess (about Isa عليه الصلاة والسلام) is guesswork (they have no accurate knowledge about his whereabouts). With certainty, they never killed him.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وبسبب قولهم -على سبيل التهكم والاستهزاء-: إنا قتلنا المسيح عيسى بن مريم رسول الله، وما قتلوا عيسى وما صلبوه، بل صلبوا رجلا شبيهًا به ظنًّا منهم أنه عيسى. ومن ادَّعى قَتْلَهُ من اليهود، ومن أسلمه إليهم من النصارى، كلهم واقعون في شك وحَيْرَة، لا عِلْمَ لديهم إلا اتباع الظن، وما قتلوه متيقنين بل شاكين متوهمين.
