The Holy Quran 2:142 — Surah Al-Baqarah

Arabic text

۞ سَيَقُولُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَا وَلَّىٰهُمْ عَن قِبْلَتِهِمُ ٱلَّتِى كَانُوا۟ عَلَيْهَا ۚ قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلْمَشْرِقُ وَٱلْمَغْرِبُ ۚ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

Translation

(When Allaah changed the Qibla from Baytul Maqdas to the Kabah, He informed Rasulullaah ﷺ that the Jews and the Mushrikeen will object to the change. Referring to them, Allaah says,) Soon the foolish people will say, "What has caused them (the Muslims) to turn away from the Qibla towards which they were facing?" Say (O Muhammad ﷺ), "To Allaah belongs the East and the West (Allaah therefore has the right to fix the Qibla to any direction He pleases and none has the right to object). He guides whoever He wills to the straight path."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

سيقول الجهال وضعاف العقول من اليهود وأمثالهم، في سخرية واعتراض: ما الذي صرف هؤلاء المسلمين عن قبلتهم التي كانوا يُصَلُّون إلى جهتها أول الإسلام; (وهي «بيت المقدس» ) قل لهم -أيها الرسول-: المشرق والمغرب وما بينهما ملك لله، فليست جهة من الجهات خارجة عن ملكه، يهدي مَن يشاء من عباده إلى طريق الهداية القويم.
