The Holy Quran 2:140 — Surah Al-Baqarah

Arabic text

أَمْ تَقُولُونَ إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَٱلْأَسْبَاطَ كَانُوا۟ هُودًا أَوْ نَصَـٰرَىٰ ۗ قُلْ ءَأَنتُمْ أَعْلَمُ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ۗ وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن كَتَمَ شَهَـٰدَةً عِندَهُۥ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

Translation

Or do you (Jews and Christians) say that Ibraheem عليه الصلاة والسلام, Ismaa'eel عليه الصلاة والسلام, Is'haaq عليه الصلاة والسلام, Ya'qoob عليه الصلاة والسلام and their descendants (children) were Jews or Christians? Say (to the Jews and Christians), "Have you more knowledge than Allaah (Who makes it clear that Ibraheem عليه الصلاة والسلام and the others were neither Jews nor Christians)?" Who can be more unjust than the one who hides the statement (evidence) of Allaah that is with him? (None can be more unjust than the Jews who hide the part of the Torah that states that Ibraheem عليه الصلاة والسلام followed the straight way of Islaam. The Jews and the Christians also hide those verses that speak about the coming of Rasulullaah ﷺ. However, they should beware because) Allaah is not unaware of what you do.

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

بل أتقولون مجادلين في الله: إن إبراهيم وإسماعيل وإسحاق ويعقوب والأسباط -وهم الأنبياء الذين كانوا في قبائل بني إسرائيل الاثنتي عشرة من ولد يعقوب- كانوا على دين اليهود أو النصارى؟ وهذا كذب; فقد بُعِثوا وماتوا قبل نزول التوراة والإنجيل. قل لهم -أيها الرسول-: أأنتم أعلم بدينهم أم الله تعالى؟
