The Holy Quran 24:60 — Surah An-Nur

Arabic text

وَٱلْقَوَٰعِدُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ٱلَّـٰتِى لَا يَرْجُونَ نِكَاحًا فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ أَن يَضَعْنَ ثِيَابَهُنَّ غَيْرَ مُتَبَرِّجَـٰتٍۭ بِزِينَةٍ ۖ وَأَن يَسْتَعْفِفْنَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُنَّ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Translation

There is no sin on those women who are sitting (at home because of old age) and have lost all hope of marriage if they remove their (excess) clothing on condition that they do not expose their charms (thereby attracting men). (However,) It is best if they abstain from this (and still cover themselves as young women do). Allaah is All Hearing, All Knowing (He knows your intentions and your actions).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

والعجائز من النساء اللاتي قعدن عن الاستمتاع والشهوة لكبرهن، فلا يطمعن في الرجال للزواج، ولا يطمع فيهن الرجال كذلك، فهؤلاء لا حرج عليهن أن يضعن بعض ثيابهن كالرداء الذي يكون فوق الثياب غير مظهرات ولا متعرضات للزينة، ولُبْسهن هذه الثياب -سترًا وتعففًا- أحسن لهن. والله سميع لأقوالكم، عليم بنياتكم وأعمالكم.
