The Holy Quran 24:16 — Surah An-Nur

Arabic text

وَلَوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَـٰذَا سُبْحَـٰنَكَ هَـٰذَا بُهْتَـٰنٌ عَظِيمٌ

Translation

When you (Muslims) heard about it, why did you not say, “It is not appropriate for us to discuss this (because we have no idea about whether it is true or not). Allaah is Pure! (In fact,) This is an atrocious smear (which cannot be true because the characters of the people involved have always been pure)!"

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وهلا قلتم عند سماعكم إياه: ما يَحِلُّ لنا الكلام بهذا الكذب، تنزيهًا لك - يارب - مِن قول ذلك على زوجة رسولك محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، فهو كذب عظيم في الوزر واستحقاق الذنب.
