The Holy Quran 17:28 — Surah Al-Isra

Arabic text

وَإِمَّا تُعْرِضَنَّ عَنْهُمُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ رَحْمَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ تَرْجُوهَا فَقُل لَّهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّيْسُورًا

Translation

Should you have to avoid them (your relatives, the poor or travellers because you have nothing to give them) seeking mercy (wealth) from your Rabb that you expect (to receive at some time, when you will be able to help them), then speak to them with gentle words (explaining to them kindly why you are unable to assist and that you will try to do so as soon as you can).

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

وإن أعرضت عن إعطاء هؤلاء الذين أُمِرْت بإعطائهم؛ لعدم وجود ما تعطيهم منه طلبًا لرزق تنتظره من عند ربك، فقل لهم قولا ليِّنًا لطيفًا، كالدعاء لهم بالغنى وسعة الرزق، وعِدْهم بأن الله إذا أيسر من فضله رزقًا أنك تعطيهم منه.
